RIP-David-Bowie

Late Sunday night, news broke that David Bowie had passed away after an 18-month bout with cancer. To title him with the profession of musician wouldn’t do Bowie the slightest justice, as over the course of his career he was so much more; producer, artist, actor, and cultural icon.

Bowie’s music was as forward thinking and progressive as could be. Dance, Soul, Rock and Roll, Blues, Electronic, Hard Rock…all of these elements were mixed to create something that was truly his own. Within his music, David introduced the guitar world to some of its best and well-known players from Mick Ronson and his fuzzed-out Les Paul Custom to Earl Slick and his Brit-Blues riffs, going on to giving Stevie Ray Vaughan a stepping stone in his career being featured on 1983’s Let’s Dance. As a producer he helped create many classic solo records including Iggy Pop’s The Idiot and Lou Reeds Transformer. Of course, there are so many others – those being two of my personal favorites.

In true Bowie fashion, he had his moves perfectly planned out even until the last minute, with his last album Blackstar being released last week designed as a parting gift to fans, said longtime coworker and producer Tony Visconti.

“He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life – a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us.”

Well said, Tony. Bowie, we’ll miss you. Thank you for all of the music and inspiration.
