We've always felt the Esquire was one of the unsung heroes of the early Fender catalogue. With just a single pickup in the bridge, the guitar was made to pick up and play right out of the case, and now the Custom Shop has released this brand-new spin on the classic instrument: the Limited Edition Pinstripe Esquire. Built of a lightweight ash body with a beautiful piece of AA-grade birdseye maple for the neck, the guitar is made to have that classic twang and spank. The guitar is loaded with players features, such as a 9.5" fretboard radius and 6105 frets for easier bending, and the Mike Eldred Esquire wiring, which throws a different capacitor in the 3rd position for a "halfway-wah" tone as opposed to the darker bassy pre-set tone you would usually find in traditional Esquire wiring.
Many guitarists are a bit puzzled when they first see the pickup switch on an Esquire. After all, with only one pickup, what exactly does the switch do? In the first position, the pickup is run wide-open through the input jack, unaffected by the tone control. This gives you a very open and bright sound. The second position allows you the use of the tone control, like a traditional Telecaster. The third position runs the pickup through a pre-set capacitor to give the pickup a bit of a different flavor. In this position just as as the first position, the tone control is not in use. The pickup switch in the Esquire is actually very important in making the one-pickup guitar way more versatile than you would expect, and it's the reason its one of our favorites at the Zoo.
