This guitar is a cool twist on the classic look of a '57 Goldtop. By giving it the red back finish that was made famous on the sunburst Les Pauls of the late 1950's, it looks like few other Goldtops out there, and we're really digging the color combination. We're big fans of the chunky feel of a '57 neck profile at the Zoo, and it was great to see one of the guitars we love with a new kind of look.

From the Custom Historic division of Gibson comes the '54 Les Paul Custom Reissue. This guitar features a mahogany top, stopbar tailpiece and correct pickup set. The Alnico V neck pickup gives a great creamy lead tone and the P-90 in the bridge has a nice bite to it. The looks of the guitar match its tone, with details such as the multi-ply body binding along with the single-ply fretboard binding. This guitar is a straight 1954 reissue with the VOS finish treatment.

By 1957, Gibson's evolving Les Paul model guitar had already undergone several key modifications that would remain as the foundation of the iconic version known around the world today as the Les Paul Standard. But while the addition of the new Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece one year earlier had greatly improved the overall functionality of the Les Paul, nothing would compare with the addition of Gibson’s pioneering humbucking pickup in 1957.

This guitar is a great twist on the classic look and sound of a '57 Les Paul, featuring an ebony finish throughout the entire instrument and a set of mini-humbucker pickups. There isn't anything "mini" about the sound on this guitar—the two Gibson mini-humbuckers still produce a full, thick output, but also add a slight midrange to the usual tone of a Les Paul. The lack of a pickguard allows the cream binding and pickup rings to really "pop" out against the ebony finish, and the killer piece of rosewood chosen for the fretboard cannot be overlooked either.
