Gibson Custom Shop Collector's Choice #18 "Dutchburst" '60 Les Paul Electric Guitar Dark Burst
Number 18 in Gibson Custom's series of Collector's Choice guitars is a 1960 Les Paul that didn't belong to a rock star or in any way alter the course of popular culture. It was a custom order back in 1960 for a Dutch guitarist who played songs like "Besame Mucho" on a North Sea cruise ship. Unique to this instrument, however, is its balanced PAF pickups, gold top hat/silver insert knobs, and a very cool special-ordered dark sunburst finish. This guitar is a hand-aged replication of the original guitar, and it plays, sounds, and looks fantastic!

Gibson Custom Shop '58 Les Paul Single-Pickup Electric Guitar Iced Tea
This Single-Pickup Les Paul from Gibson Custom Shop is identical to the Shop's standard '58 reissue two-pickup model, the exception being the elimination of the front pickup. With one pickup, no toggle switch and half the control knobs, there is a lot of room on the top of the instrument, making the guitar lighter, more resonant, and a lot of fun to play. Tone-wise it is a lot more versatile than what you might expect from a one-pickup instrument, from great warm jazz tones to a classic distortion with lots of mid-range and attack.

Gibson Custom Shop '58 Mahogany Explorer Natural
More than 55 years since the Gibson Explorer made its 1958 debut, it still looks radical--arguably the world's first pointy guitar (alongside its Flying V and Moderne stablemates). This very special Benchmark reissue is nearly identical to the original, with the exception being mahogany instead of korina, the latter being the wood species used on the '58 models. Gold hardware and custom-wound Benchmark EBucker pickups help make for great looks and authentic warm Explorer tone.

Gibson Custom Shop '60 Les Paul Reissue Heavy Aged Bourbon Burst
This Gibson Custom 1960 Les Paul Heavy Aged has a gorgeous, heavily aged Bourbon Burst finish over a killer flame top. The appointments are period-correct to the original Les Paul of 1960. They include body binding that is a darker cream to match the original 50’s era binding, a hide glue neck fit, and a 1960 slim-tapered neck profile. Other features are Custom-wound Custom Bucker pickups, aged nickel hardware, and Kluson “Deluxe” Green tuners.

Gibson Custom Shop 54 Les Paul VOS Electric Guitar Goldtop Dark Back
Here’s a brand new 1954 Historic Les Paul with a heart of gold, a top of gold, a sound of gold. If the price of actual gold continues to go up, here’s a long-term investment that will deliver continuous, unmitigated pleasure unlike volatile financial markets.

The 2014 Historic Custom Shop guitars have some been improved with some great, historically accurate changes that actually began in 2013. The guys in Nashville know full well how the guitars that were innovated back in the 1950s and ‘60s have a certain mojo and untangible greatness and they’re pulling out the stops in the effort to get as close as possible to the originals. Thus, Gibson has implemented aspects of original construction, such as the use of aniline dye to accurately stain the mahogany bodies and necks; darkening the fretboard binding to match the originals; and unsheathing truss rods from the tube encasings that were used in later models.

For 2014 and hereafter, the Gibson Custom Shop will continue a very significant change that was also begun in 2013: the use of hide glue for the neck/body joint and for gluing the fretboard to the neck. The crystallizing effect that hide glue creates as it dries helps maintain a rigid connection. The problem with most wood glue is the tendency to retain elasticity, which can dampen the resonance between woods. The switch back to hide glue is something you can truly hear. Furthermore, specific to Goldtop guitars, Gibson also conducted a long search of company records and held conversations with collectors and players in its effort to reformulate the Goldtop finish to match the original’s deep, dark, gold luster. The Goldtop’s back is also reformulated to match the original from the 1950s.

This specific 1954 Goldtop sounds and feels like guitar that has been played lovingly for 50-plus years. Sonically, its P-90 pickups sound period correct, offering signature mids and lows with plenty of top-end shimmer. The pickups used in the Custom Shop guitars are faithful to the originals and respond magnificently wherever your volume control is set. Ultimately, a fantastic guitar that rocks superbly right out of the shipping carton.
