Gibson Custom Shop Benchmark Limited Edition '58 Figured Explorer Electric Guitar Iced Tea
They’ve finally done it! Gibson Custom Shop has taken the hugely popular, painstakingly-vintage accurate 2013 ’59 Les Paul and morphed it into one of the coolest Explorers we’ve seen! As a Benchmark release, only a few authorized dealers get the honor of carrying these limited models, and we sure are excited to be some of the first people to see a nicely figured maple top on a 1-piece mahogany ’58 Explorer body first-hand.

The neck has a custom profile that is extremely comfortable, yet substantial. The appointments follow in the footsteps of this year’s historic re-issues, with nickel Kluson tuners, period-correct cream binding, and gold top hat control knobs. For pickups, two Custombuckers are slightly underwound, delivering the closest PAF recreations to date. Add in period correct construction, and you’ve got an Explorer like no other, that absolutely sings!

Gibson Custom Shop Collector's Choice 22 Tommy Colletti 1959 Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar Ebony
We've got to admit, this is really exciting for us. As dealers of the excellent Gibson Custom Shop Collectors Choice series – it's a privilege for us to offer the new Collectors Choice #22, the Tommy Colletti 1959 Les Paul Custom. This one is #2 out of the entire run! Tommy, who is the owner of The Music Zoo worked very closely with the Custom Shop to recreate his personal '59 Custom, from every last nick and ding down to the very unique neck which has a very soft "V" profile to it that fits right in the palm of your hand.

There's a cool backstory to the original Les Paul from which this Collectors Choice came; it originally belonged to James Honeyman-Scott, guitarist and founding member of The Pretenders. Acquired by Tommy a number of years ago, the guitar retains all of its original characteristics and vibe from its time with Honeyman-Scott. We even have the case with The Pretenders logo stenciled onto it (the CC #22 does not come with such a case). It's not often that people can play both the Collectors Choice and the original that spawned it, but we're lucky enough to do so and can say that this is as close as it gets!

Gibson Custom Shop James A. Willis Warhorse Les Paul Electric Guitar
Gibson's Artist in Residence James A. Willis has created numerous works of guitar art for the Gibson Custom Shop. The Warhorse guitar is one of Mr. Willis' finest creations. Gibson Custom Shop Limited Edition '58 Explorer Electric Guitar VOS Aspen White
When Gibson released the Explorer in 1958, its radical design was perhaps a little too ahead-of-its-time, and very few of these units were produced. However there was a huge Explorer revival in the 80's, when wild in-your-face guitarists welcomed its edgy aesthetic. Plus the combination of humbuckers with an all mahogany neck and body lends for pure rock power.

The limited run Gibson Custom Shop '58 Reissue Explorer is an accurate recreation of this futuristic piece of mid-century history. Features include a '59 "V" shape neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and a cool VOS Aspen White finish, which has turned to a yellow hue through the antiquing process. Two Custombucker pickups deliver a heavy sound that can be saturated to create amazing sustain. There are not many of these classic reissues, so check one out before it's too late...

Gibson Custom Shop Music Zoo Exclusive Historic Select Roasted Reissue '59 Les Paul Electric Guitar Aged Lemonburst
Go ahead; tweak the finishes to be as thin as possible, swap your pickups for the closest to the original PAF's, use the purest nickel strings you can find. Do you know what we've all been leaving out in the chase to reach the holy grain of tones? The wood. The woods used in original 1950's Gibson Les Pauls (and many other vintage guitars of that stature) were made from trees that were from old growths forests – trees that were already 100's of years old, if not more. These woods were sturdy, and had matured long enough for the excess moisture to dry away. An ingredient that was essential in the tone of the guitars that we all know and lust after.

Flash forward to 2015, after years of Historic Reissues and most recently the excellent True Historics – The Music Zoo and the Gibson Custom Shop have worked together to bring you the new Music Zoo Exclusive Roasted Reissue '59 Les Paul. These guitars are True Historic Les Pauls whose wood (mahogany, maple, and rosewood) have undergone a thermal treatment process. This process takes all of the excess moisture out of the wood, giving the wood increased durability in weather changes, dimensional stability (reduced chances of swelling or shrinking), gives the wood a beautiful brown color. On a molecular level, the roasted wood is almost identical to that of 350 year old lumber: the same lumber used in those original vintage Les Pauls. Last but not least, the process is entirely Green. There are no additives, chemicals, or anything artificial that is being used in the roasting process.

Add in these qualities of the roasted wood to all the specs that come with the Gibson True Historic Series, and you've got one hell of a Les Paul. The articulation and punch of these guitars have to be heard. There's a roundness that the treatment gives to the wood where the bass sits just right, the treble on both neck and bridge pickup cut but aren't shrill, and call us vain...but we love the way the brown tint of the wood comes through the burst finishes and shows off the figuring and grain even more so than usual. The weights of these guitars are also all extremely comfortable, and most are coming in around the mid 8lbs mark. The Music Zoo Exclusive Roasted Reissue '59 Les Paul – try one and see for yourself.

This is a special guitar in the run of Roasted Reissues, sent to us by the Gibson Custom Shop as one of the first fully Roasted Les Pauls. This guitar has all the specs of a True Historic, including all hide-glue construction and all True Historic plastic parts and features, but with a Historic Select serial number, reflecting it's customized nature.
