Gibson Custom Shop Collector's Choice #16 Ed King '59 Les Paul "Redeye" Electric Guitar Kingburst
We love the idea behind the Collectors Choice Series from the Gibson Custom Shop. Instead of reissuing an entire year of Les Pauls, i.e. the '57, 58, or 59 Les Paul, the Collectors Choice takes one specific guitar built in those historic years, and clones the instrument down to a T. For the 16th instrument released from the Collectors Series guitars, Gibson got their hands on the go-to guitar for Ed King, member Lynard Skynyrd and Strawberry Alarm Clock; a 1959 Les Paul nicknamed "Redeye."

King’s original ’59 has an immediate aesthetic appeal, with a light burst that has spots of red due to uneven UV exposure over the years. This has been recreated to exacting detail at the Custom Shop. The feel and sound of the guitar are extremely special, something that has kept Ed King attached to it for all these years, and Gibson has chosen the right weight mahogany and exacting neck carves to recreate that magic.

Of course, like other 2013 Custom Shop Reissues, the "Redeye" was constructed using a hide glue neck joint, historically accurate truss rod assembly, aniline dye for the back and sides, accurate binding, and a single layer rosewood fretboard. This will get you as close as possible to owning one of the quintessential rock relics of all time.

Gibson Custom Shop Collector's Choice #17 1959 Keith Nelson Les Paul "Louis" Electric Guitar Nelson Dirty Lemon
This is the 17th instrument released from the Collectors Series guitars: a 1959 Les Paul borrowed from Buckcherry guitarist Keith Nelson, which he lovingly nicknamed "Louis."

The original '59 9-1062 (aka "Louis") was acquired by Keith Nelson when a longtime friend and vintage guitar broker gave him the opportunity to play six original 1959 Les Pauls side by side. Must be nice! Nelson put each guitar through the ringer, carefully playing and feeling out each, until he settled on what would become his workhorse axe. This incredible ’59 was kept in incredible condition for 30 years in a private condition, with a softly faded burst and sweet tone. However Nelson had no plans on keeping Louis locked up, using it to record Buckcherry’s 2013 release Confessions and playing it at every live show since.

All the nuances of this well played and well maintained guitar have been recreated with startling accuracy, using digital scanning and professional audio testing. Of course, like other 2013 Custom Shop Reissues, Rosie was constructed using a hide glue neck joint, historically accurate truss rod assembly, aniline dye for the back and sides, accurate binding, and a single layer rosewood fretboard. This will get you as close as possible to owning one of the quintessential rock relics of all time.

Gibson Custom Shop Exclusive '59 Wraparound ES-335 VOS Electric Guitar Natural
The Music Zoo is proud to have this Gibson Custom Shop ES-335 with a very unique "wraparound" style bridge/tailpiece familiar to the original Goldtop Les Paul and '50s Juniors and Specials. We've had these 335s before, yet this example was constructed according to Gibson Custom Shop's 2014 vintage-accurate building specs.

These vintage-accurate changes are evident in the following changes: the truss rod in the mahogany neck is unsheathed from its tube encasing from previous years, and the neck is fitted to the body with hide glue. These are changes increase the resonance of the instrument, and the hide-glue also is helpful in removing the neck of the guitar for repair without damaging the surrounding wood of the body. The Kluson Deluxe tuners have been redesigned, with a proper vintage shape and color. Also, the fretboard and body binding has been darkened color-wise for a more vintage-accurate look.

Aesthetically, sonically, whatever is the case, the Exclusive ES-335 Wraparound resonates with tone and plenty of unique character!

Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar Aspen White Gloss
Today’s Les Paul Custom is based on the model from the mid-1950s, but with several modern appointments. It is crafted with a hand-carved maple top fitted to a body made from a solid piece of mahogany with strategically routed holes to lessen the weight of the guitar, resulting in a Les Paul with enhanced acoustic qualities and improved resonance. The 24 ľ-inch scale length neck is also made from one solid piece of mahogany topped by a 22-fret richlite fingerboard outfitted with figured acrylic block inlays and given Gibson’s traditional rounded profile. The pickups are Gibson’s 490R in the neck position, which offers the tonal characteristics of the original PAFs, and the 498T in the bridge position, which swaps the 490R’s Alnico II magnet for an Alnico V, thus making it slightly hotter with emphasis on mid-ranges and highs. Other appointments include Gibson’s legendary Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, metal tulip tuners, multi-ply white and black binding on both the top and back, gold hardware and a 1 11/16” nut width.

Gibson Custom Shop Limited Edition '57 Les Paul Electric Guitar Lee Roy Goldtop
You can't get much more of an iconic guitar than a 1957 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop. This was the first year the world was introduced two humbucking pickups in a solid piece of mahogany with a maple top...and the rest is history. With this limited run of '57 reissues, Gibson has supplied the Zoo with some spectular pieces. The neck is a custom profile that we feel accurately respresents the exact contours of the original. The pickups are slightly underwound Custombuckers that also represent the response and dynamics of a PAF that you might find in an original.

Last year, Gibson came out with a '57 Les Paul customized for Nashville singer/songwriter, Lee Roy Parnell, and people absolutely loved the finish, so Gibson has gone with the exact hue of gold for this instrument. Add in features like a one-piece rosewood fretboard, historically accurate cream binding, Kluson Deluxe tuners, and an ABR-1 bridge, and this piece is gonna take you back to the ORIGINAL humbucker sound!

Gibson Custom Shop Limited Edition '59 ES-335 Electric Guitar Orange Sparkle
The Gibson ES-335 has always been one of our favorite models at the Zoo. This one comes in a very cool limited orange sparkle finish that while striking, is subdued enough to maintain the class that this instrument deserves. The Es-335 is a design that's been a classic ever since its introduction in the late '50s as the worlds first semi-hollowbody electric. The acoustic properties allow us to enjoy the guitar unplugged just hanging around the house, but when you plug it in...the 335 becomes a tone monster that drips with thick rhythm sounds and tons of resonance. You'll wanna get your hands on this unique piece soon because very few were made in this finish!

Gibson Custom Shop Limited Run '60 Les Paul Electric Guitar Lemonburst
Lemonburst has always been an acquired taste of ours, but once we caught the bug, we caught it. We always love how the light shades of yellow let you see every inch of figuring in the maple top.

The Music Zoo is incredibly happy to offer the brand-new and reinvented Gibson Custom Shop 2014 Limited Edition 1960 Les Paul Reissue. Along with all the fantastic changes that the Custom Shop made to create one of the best reissues ever with the 2014 model - we've tweaked it just a bit more to get this Limited Edition '60 exactly the way we wanted it, and not to pat ourselves on the back too much...but we believe that we got it right.

The year 2013 marked an historic year for the Gibson Custom Shop reissue; an historic year for unprecedented historic accuracy. The folks at Gibson have a keen understand that, according to their loyal fanatics, there is a magic in those early original Gibson electrics, and the closer the reissue can get, the better. They also understand that no detail is too small when it comes to vintage lutherie. For this transitional year, aniline dye was used to accurately stain the mahogany bodies, fretboard binding was darkened a bit, the classic Kluson Deluxe tuners were perfected with the proper vintage shape and color, and the truss rods were unsheathed from the typical tube encasings so that customers could be assured that even the inner guts were vintage accurate. Even the method of construction was brought back to the middle of the century, with Gibson’s Custom Shop using hide-glue to fit necks to the bodies, a change that adds resonance to the instrument.

Well for 2014 Gibson Custom Shop isn’t messing with success, taking the Reissue a step further and using hide-glue for the fretboard as well. The crystalizing effect that hide glue creates as it dries helps maintain a rigid connection between the fretboard and the neck. The problem with most wood glues is that they tend to retain elasticity. This can dampen the resonance between woods, and switching back to hide glue has an affect you can hear.

We really love the direction Gibson is going and are proud to be carrying the closest recreations of a classic Les Paul to date! These 2014 models also still carry the new CustomBucker PAF recreations, which sound full and detailed, with lots of punch and great response to both your picking dynamics as well as the volume and tone settings. They've also added a cool metal embossed 2014 switchplate. So come down to the Zoo, pick up a 2014 Reissue and see what you’ve always been missing!

Gibson Custom Shop Limited Run 3-Pickup '59 Les Paul Gloss Electric Guitar Kentucky Bourbon Fade
Oh Limited Run 3-Pickup '59 reissue, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways; a beautifully wispy thick-flamed top, lightly shaded Kentucky Bourbon Fade finish, and not one or two, but three Underwound Custom Bucker humbuckers.

The Music Zoo is incredibly happy to offer the brand-new and reinvented Gibson Custom Shop 2013 Limited Edition 3-Pickup '59 Les Paul Reissue. Along with all the fantastic changes that the Custom Shop made to create one of the best reissues ever with the 2013 model - we've tweaked it just a bit more to get this Limited Edition '59 exactly the way we wanted it, and not to pat ourselves on the back too much...but we believe that we got it right.

What makes this Limited '59 Les Paul unlike any other 2013 Reissue are mainly two components; these guitars have Underwound Custom Bucker Pickups as well as TonePros long posts and studs. As getting modern humbuckers as close to the original PAF pickups are the bane of any Les Paul aficionados existence (including ours), we really wanted to nail that bell-like (almost single coil-esque) clarity of the original '50s pickups. We found that under-winding the pickup gave us exactly what we were looking for; a lush wave of overtones that really bring out the best of every note in your playing. As guitarists who have played original Les Pauls with real-deal PAF's - we can say for sure that these are up there with some of the best recreations we've ever heard.

Next up, we gave the guitar TonePros long studs and posts; because it seemed to just make sense. The bridge and tailpiece are where all the guitars sustain comes from - why not have the posts and studs really anchoredin there for the tightest connection possible? You hear the difference with one strum.

The 2013 Reissue Changes: The mahogany back and sides of the guitars are stained with aniline dye, which presents the mahogany grain in the best detail possible. The truss rod in the mahogany neck is unsheathed from its tube encasing from previous years, and the neck is fitted to the body with hide glue. These are changes which we feel increases the resonance of the instrument, and the hide-glue also is helpful in removing the neck of the guitar for repair without damaging the surrounding wood of the body. The Kluson Deluxe double-band tuners have been redesigned, with a proper vintage shape and color. Also, the fretboard and body binding has been darkened color-wise for a more vintage-accurate look.

All in all, we thought we couldn't be any bigger fans of the Historic Reissue Les Paul at the Music Zoo than we already are, but these guitars have without a doubt taken it up a notch. They're all resonant, toneful, and best of all - fun to play. Pick one up, and see for yourself.
