Les Paul History

The Les Paul is an instantly recognizable and immensely popular guitar, with unlimited staying power and a rich history. It was first built in 1952, as a collaboration between Les Paul and the Gibson Guitar Company. The early permutations featured a mahogany body with a maple top, great-looking "gold" top finish made with bronzing powder, cream covered P-90 pickups, and a trapeze tailpiece.

The Les Paul Junior and Les Paul Custom were both introduced a couple years later in 1954. The Junior was originally a "student model", with no contoured maple top and only a single p-90, while the Custom featured an ebony fingerboard, gold hardware, and gloss black finish with white binding. In 1955 the Les Paul Special was introduced - structurally identical to the Junior, but with a pair of P-90s and a different pickguard.

As the decade came to a close, the Les Paul would eventually feature the new Seth Lover designed "PAF" humbuckers starting in 1957, as well as a new tune-o-matic bridge for better intonation. In 1958, the Les Paul carried a new sunburst finish, and up until 1960, these examples are known as "Bursts" - they are some of the most valuable electric guitars on the planet. Ironically, they didn't sell well back then and were discontinued after the 1960 model year.

In 1961, the Les Paul was completely redesigned, and looked like the modern day Gibson SG. The "Les Paul" name was only attached to these guitars for a couple years, before it was re-named the SG. But thankfully, in 1968, the Les Paul resurfaced, as players such as Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Peter Green had been using Sunburst Les Pauls throughout the mid '60s, and Gibson was smart to respond to the demand this was creating. The guitar has remained in production ever since and it's humbucker variant is the most common.

Gibson experimented with many other Les Paul configurations from the '70s up until the modern day. The Les Paul Deluxe of '70s - loaded with the newly offered "mini-humbuckers" is still occasionally seen in Gibson's modern day lineup. The Les Paul Studio, first introduced in 1983, is an affordable staple of every subsequent model year to. Other designs that have resurfaced include the "double cut" Les Paul, and the P-90 loaded "arched" top Les Paul.

Some of the most legendary artist model guitars are found in the form of a Les Paul. Jimmy Page, Slash, Joe Perry, Peter Frampton, and Ace Frehley are some of the huge names that have been connected with the Les Paul. These models often are instant collectors pieces and can fetch serious prices.
