About Our Ukuleles Product Catalog

The ukulele is an instrument with a rich history and impressive staying power - and today is an equally viable stringed strummer for both the hobbyist and professional. The Music Zoo stocks a wide variety of ukuleles at every price point and in many styles - from handcrafted USA Martins all the way down to affordable gifts for your musically inclined significant other.

Ukulele History

The Ukulele saw it's origins in Hawaii in the late 19th century. It was inspired by a Portuguese instrument brought to the islands known as the machete, which was a similarly sized instrument built for "sea-faring" folk who need a stringed instrument that was easier to transport. Hawaii's King at the time, David Kalakaua, was impressed by the ukulele and his acknowledgement helped to popularize the instrument. The ukulele hit the US mainland in the early 1900s, and popularity boomed from 1915 through 1920, where it became intertwined with modern American jazz music as well as traditional Hawaiian styles. Regal, Harmony, and Martin started building ukuleles during this time period, and the Hawaiian based Kamaka family is also known as one of the world's finest ukulele luthiers. The ukulele was used often in contemporary music through the '60s, but then experienced a lull. But the '90s through the present day has seen a resurgence of the instrument, even in modern pop and rock music.

The ukulele is usually offered in 4 different sizes, soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone - from smallest to largest. The larger instruments produce a lower timbre. The ukulele has 4 strings, usually tuned G-C-E-A. They are made from a variety of tonewoods, and even plastic materials, especially the beginner instruments.
