Charvel Custom Shop 7-String Mahogany San Dimas Electric Guitar Natural
This 7-String Natural Oil San Dimas was built by the very talented "Red" Dave Nichols. The oil finish makes this guitar just about as fast a player as you can get, and we love the look of the maple fretboard sans inlays, which keeps the natural wood motif going throughout the entire guitar.

Charvel Custom Shop Exclusive Carbonized Recycled Redwood San Dimas HS NOS Electric Guitar - Used
This pre-owned Charvel San Dimas is from an exclusive run that The Music Zoo did with Charvel a few years ago. These guitars were unique in that they were built with recycled redwood bodies and carbonized curly maple necks. This guitar is in excellent condition save for some pick marks and light wear around the playing area. Otherwise, magnefique! This guitar and its ilk have an interesting backstory so, for your infotainment pleasure, here's the original description we originally posted these guitars for sale on our website. Read on...

This is a very special run of instruments with a great history; introducing the Music Zoo exclusive Charvel Custom Shop Recycled Redwood San Dimas. This Redwood has a fantastic story to it that starts with a very exciting time in American history. We think the Redwood really lets the nuances of your playing shine through. Notes come out crystal clear no matter how lightly played, and the resonance of this guitar when turned up through an overdriven tube amp gave us one of those Spinal Tap moments; you could go for a walk and come back to the E chord still going.

We decided to build these out with two direct mounted pickups, crown head tuners, a light oil finish and your choice of Floyd Rose or NOS tremolo. The curly maple necks have been carbonized, a revolutionary process to stabilize the moisture content of the wood, significantly lightening it, making it more resonant, and stabilizing it against atmospheric changes forever. These guitars are a medium weight and full of tone, with an incredibly comfortable neck, and a piece of wood that just kind of makes you go "wow" when you get it in your hands. Read on for more info on both the Redwood bodies and carbonized necks.

Recycled Redwood Body:
The pieces of Redwood used in this run of guitars was originally used in the construction of the Brown's Canyon Trestle, near Occidental, California. The trestle was built in 1876, and at the time it was the longest and tallest trestle west of the Mississippi to carry trains which were logging the Redwood forest following the California Gold Rush. The trestle was taken apart during the 1930's, and some of the lumber was used for constructing a San Jose, California shopping center. Fast forward to today, when the shopping center is no more, and we have turned these 135-year-old pieces of wood into some of the best sounding Charvels we have ever heard.

Carbonized Maple Neck:
Kiln-drying is an age-old technique used to season wood for use in building instruments, but this new process takes kiln-drying a step further. The wood is essentially cooking in a pressurized kiln in its own moisture and gasses as they escape. Much of the hemi-cellulose is cooked out, similar to what happens as wood ages. Cooked wood resembles 100+ year old wood in this respect. Loss of hemi-cellulose lightens the wood and reduces the damping factor so that it has a crisper, longer ring time, losing more weight than stiffness so that the stiffness to weight ratio is increased. The lignin (glue) undergoes a hardening process, making the wood less flexible. The loss of hemi-cellulose and hardening of lignin collectively increase the stiffness to weight ratio by 15% to 25% depending on species. Most of the cellularly bound water is driven off or combined into larger, more stable molecules. This characteristic makes the wood significantly more stable in use, and locks the moisture content around 10 percent. This means that the wood will not take on moisture nor release moisture during its life, which keeps it from being susceptible to climate and humidity changes as the seasons change or as the guitar travels from city to city. This equals fewer neck adjustments and playing issues over the lifetime of the instrument. The release of this moisture also greatly reduces the weight of the wood, making for lightweight and ultimately more resonant necks.

Charvel Custom Shop San Dimas Mahogany Electric Guitar Natural
Tone, Feel, and Performance. What else do you need from your axe? The Charvel® Natural Series San Dimas guitars created by The Music Zoo deliver all three in spades. This exclusive line of USA-Made Custom Shop Charvel® San Dimas guitars is designed to deliver huge bang for the buck. Read on for the whole story behind the Music Zoo Naturals:

In 2006 The Music Zoo's owner and vintage Charvel aficianado Tommy Colletti got on a plane to California and sat down with The Charvel Custom Shop to talk about a guitar he wanted to build. The idea was simple. No paint but instead a hand-rubbed, oil-finished body. One pickup, one knob. No frills, all business, and a world-class level of quality that The Music Zoo's customers would demand. Charvel had recently joined forces with Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, and the build quality of the new Charvel product was stellar. Plus, we were all excited that Charvel guitars were once again being produced with the famous Stratocaster headstock, just like the Charvels from the late '70s/early 80s. The new Charvel necks, with an 1 11/16" nut width, and the skunk stripe on the back look and feel the part of their vintage predecessors. The time was right, and the San Dimas Natural Series from Charvel and The Music Zoo was born.

The bodies of the Natural Series guitars are what gives them monster tone. We spec'd high-quality Mahogany, Swamp Ash, or Koa; all three are fantastic tonewoods. Without thick layers of paint, the wood can breathe and resonate, resulting in a louder guitar acoustically, and a more responsive guitar plugged into your amp. The hand-rubbed oil finish is durable and brings out the beauty of the wood, and brings down the cost of the guitar to boot. The solid brass volume knob is another throwback to the original San Dimas.

The performance: Depending on your needs, the Charvel Natural Series San Dimas comes with either a vintage-style NOS brass tremolo or a rock-solid Floyd Rose with locking nut. This custom model comes with Seymour Duncan Custom 5 humbucker in the bridge and a Quarter Pounder single coil pickup in the neck position. Control is kept simple with a just single volume knob and a 3-way toggle switch.

Charvel Custom Shop San Dimas Nitro Aged Ash Electric Guitar Sea Foam Green
Music Zoo is proud to have a new batch of Nitro Aged Charvel San Dimas guitars available. These wonderful guitars are vaguely similar to what we’ve done in the past, which was to essentially recreate the vintage Charvel owned by Zookeeper Tommy Colletti. Our original run of Nitros were finished in nitrocellulose laquer and gently aged to reflect years of playing and, thus, reinstill the idea that the San Dimas remains a workhorse of guitars—a stripped-down, no-nonsense, no-frills instrument capable of exploring plenty of sonic territory. The same aesthetic holds true with our new batch, which have some particular difference by way of a matching headstock; a shallower, thinner neck profile similar to a ‘60s Strat; DiMarzio pickups; Schaller tuners; and a San Dimas shaped fretboard at the guitar’s highest register as opposed to our original’s being similar to a Strat neck at that position. Either way, It’s a fantastic looking and playing guitar with the extra-special, less-is-more vibe that’s best exemplified with a Charvel.

Charvel Custom Shop San Dimas NOS Electric Guitar Hot Rod Flames - Used
If there's one thing this pre-owned Charvel San Dimas guitar has, its character. With it's "hot rod flame" paint job, it resurrects the days of high power muscle cars and vibrant paint jobs. However, the excitement doesn't end with just the paint on this thing, delivering a mighty punch from it's Seymour Duncan Hot Rails neck pickup and a Custom 5 bridge humbucker. A NOS brass vintage tremolo and abalone dot inlays add the finishing touch of this 80s-style beauty! This guitar is in excellent condition with the original hardshell case, paperwork, and tremolo arm.

Charvel Custom Shop San Dimas Rosewood Flat Top Electric Guitar - Used
Pre-owned, but you wouldn’t know it. This 2009 Custom Shop Charvel guitar is a San Dimas model with a mahogany body and a unique, flat, oil-finished rosewood top with mother-of-pearl binding that looks like a thick slab of chocolate, albeit chocolate doesn’t have the magnificent patterns and striking grain of this rosewood. The bolt-on neck and its headstock are also rosewood, adorned with a birds-eye maple fretboard and maple skunk stripe down the middle. One Seymour Duncan TB pickup and volume control is all ya get, but hey—we’re talking San Dimas. A Floyd Rose tremolo system and chrome Schaller tuners round out the features. It’s a great playing and sounding guitar; bright with a big acoustic presence and with a light action that lends itself easily to tapping and all that stuff. Noteworthy are the harmonics that pour from this instrument; bending the top strings in the lower registers evoked amazing overtones. Overall, she’s a visually stunning with wonderful musicality. If chocolate could sing Puccini, here’s proof positive. Comes with original hardshell case, a tremolo arm, and hang tag.
