Charvel Guthrie Prototype

Guthrie Govan was once at a crossroads; should he pursue an intellectual course studying English at the esteemed Oxford University in Britain, or should he apply his smarts toward a musical career that currently finds him as one of the world’s leading and most virtuosic guitar talents… Of course he chose the latter and guitar lovers are so much the better for it.

Recently, Guthrie entered a crossroads regarding his choice of guthrie-0476instrument, ultimately leading to a collaboration with Charvel to create a signature model, based on the legendary Charvel San Dimas, that  encompasses all of his wants, needs, and desires within a guitar. After two years, finally, they’ve emerged with the Charvel Guthrie Govan Signature Model electric guitar, and The Music Zoo just took delivery of a handful of limited edition Prototypes that are based off what will become the regular production model signature guitars. We’re honored to be the only dealer in North America to receive these exclusive prototypes. These guitars are identical to the instruments that Guthrie has been playing on the road for the past two years.

These limited edition prototypes feature an un-cooked (or un-roasted if you prefer) basswood body with gorgeous, figured maple tops (either birds-eye or flame) and a bolt-on, carmelized (roasted) maple neck with 24 extra-jumbo stainless-steel frets and a compound 12-16” radius. The roasting process Charvel Guthrie Prototype Neck (1 of 1)allows the neck to resonate better and generally have an older, worked-in feel. The neck and body are joined by a contoured heel, and minus the neck plate, allows for very comfortable access to the fretboard’s upper reaches. Electronics begin with custom-wound Charvel MFB pickups in a hum-sing-hum configuration that absolutely will cover plenty of sonic terrain, as required by Mr. Govan. The bridge is a Charvel Tremol-No unit with an oversized brass block, and in combination with Sperzel locking tuners and a bone nut, the instrument can withstand heavy tremolo activity and maintain tuning. Of course, being based on the San Dimas, Guthrie’s guitar has a 25.5” scale length and a neck width of 1.68” across the nut.

We’ll be receiving stock of the production model Guthrie Govan Signatures soon… These guitars will use cooked basswood bodies and they’ll be equally mind blowing! In sum, the Guthrie Signatures are  the kind of guitars that will stretch your playing to the limit.
