John Mayer played a secret show just down the road from us at the cozy Music Hall of Williamsburg on Monday night, warming up his all-star band for the 2010 Battle Studies tour. As usual, he had with him his Fender® Custom Shop Relic Stratocaster®, known as “The Black One.” We get asked all the time about this guitar; it’s got a very cool, beat-to-hell vibe that we like a lot. Earlier this year John Mayer announced on his blog that Fender would be 83 Masterbuilt replicas of The Black One built for about $6K a piece, along with a lower priced production version. So far, no official word from Fender on a release date, but we do have it on good authority that we’ll learn a lot about it at the NAMM show in January. So stay tuned for that. In the meantime, since you can’t yet have a John Mayer replica, check out The Music Zoo Exclusive Ultimate Relics. We also get asked all the time if John Mayer got inspiration for The Black One from our Ultimate Relic series, and to that we say …maybe.
