Classical / Nylon History

The classical acoustic guitar was the first modern acoustic guitar ever envisioned, most often credited to Spanish luthier Antonio de Torres. These guitars were actually a bit smaller than the modern classical guitar, but were standard at the time. The modern classical guitar usually has a 12th fret body and neck joint, and generally uses either a spruce or cedar top, with a variety of tonewoods for the back, the most popular including rosewood and mahogany. The strings are made from nylon, as opposed to steel strings found on other styles of acoustics, which generally give a warmer, smoother, and more rounded tone, ideal for the complex chords of passages of the connected musical repertoire. Classical guitars also have a wider nut width, often up to 2" - which also allows extra space for the complex playing style.

In the 20th century - Andres Segovia, a household name for even those with little knowledge of the classical guitar, helped to put classical music on the map with his modern guitar transcriptions and performances. Francisco Tarrega (1850-1900) was also considered one of the fathers of classical guitar composition and helped to originally popularize the instrument.

The Flamenco style of playing and flamenco guitar also stems from these original designs. The Flamenco guitar uses a thinner top and less internal bracing, which produces a more percussive and brighter sound, complimenting the fast flamenco playing style which involved "rasgueado" - strumming of the guitar with flicks of the fingers to create a rhythmic roll.

Today, nylon string construction has been adopted by manufacturers who don't necessarily build traditional classical guitars. Many nylon string guitars exist that otherwise take the form of a modern Auditorium or Concert guitar. These are designed for players looking to crossover, and are looking for a bit more a familiar hand-feel, while still providing the unique tone nylon strings offer. Taylor, Takamine, Yamaha, and many others build guitars such as these.
