Founded by Larry DiMarzio in 1971, the company was perhaps the first to start the aftermarket ‘boutique’ pickup craze of hunting down tones available outside of what came stock in your guitar or bass. The first pickups available were the Super Distortion and Dual Sound humbuckers. The Super Distortion became a hit for guitarists who wanted a higher output humbucker to really slam the front end of their amplifier. Ace Frehley was one of the very first users of the pickup, having been introduced to DiMarzio as a fellow New Yorker.
