The AEA R84 is a modern take on the classic R44. Using advances in more recent technology, the folks at AEA were able to achieve a classic, large ribbon sound, with some modern conveniences, including a light weight body and more mild proximity effect. Also the efficient design of the R84 puts in a more affordable price range than the historically accurate R44 series. The reduction in proximity effect makes this a completely versatile ribbon mic, great for close micing even loud sources, since its passive nature allows the R84 handle high SPL’s. Because of these qualities, it has been deemed an invaluable tool by many top engineers, looking to impart that classic sound, even in modern productions. Due to its extremely low resonant frequency (16.5Hz), the R84, like other AEA mics, creates a sound that is both true-to-life, and sits in a mix in a very transparent way.
