A common myth with ribbon mics is they have plenty of character, but they can sound too dark and sometimes downright muddy. Now while there tends to be less of a presence boost in the top end, as compared to other types of microphones, oftentimes people are just not using the right preamp with their ribbon. I big part of the problem is that, if the input impedance of the preamp is not high enough, the microphone has to work harder to push the signal, and there is often coloration. Ribbon microphones suffer the most from this situation, and much of the detail can be lost.

Without getting too technical, ribbons benefit most from an extremely clean preamp with an input impedance much higher than many would think necessary. The result is an extended low end that retains al the power that the mic has captured, and a much more detailed and present top end.
