The Gibson SG holds an esteemed place in the Gibson pantheon. It’s every bit a Gibson, built with a Mahogany body and neck, and a Rosewood fretboard, all of which yield that signature warmth and midrange that Gibson’s solidbody guitars are known for. Throughout the years, the SG has been a rock and roll beast, and the new SG Special absolutely lives up to its great reputation. It’s a straightforward, lightweight guitar that uses standard Gibson electronics (two volume controls and two tone controls for each pickup, along with a three-way toggle switch) and power from two ’61 Zebra humbucker pickups. One notable feature of the SG Special is its 24-fret neck, making it an excellent guitar for soloists who require an expanded range. The neck, meanwhile, has a Slim Taper profile that works well for high-performance playing. The SG Special features the 2015 updates that Gibson has made to its lineup, including a brass nut and G-Force (formerly Min-Etune) automatic tuning. But, in the end, it remains the classic SG.
