Gibson Kirk Hammett Greeny Les Paul Standard: Product Review and Video

One of - if not the most famous 1959 Sunburst Les Pauls of all time that's been owned by Peter Green, Gary Moore and then Kirk Hammett is recreated by Gibson USA!

Talk about a legacy through one guitar. Gibson USA has announced the Kirk Hammett Greeny Les Paul Standard - a replica of serial number 9 2208. To the non-insane guitar geeks around us, that serial is of a specific 1959 Les Paul that was used by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac fame. In the '70s Green sold it to another legend, Gary Moore who used it up until the 2000s when he sold it to a private collector. Eventually, the guitar made it into the hands of Metallica's lead guitarist Kirk Hammett who plays the original guitar to this day!

What makes the Greeny Les Paul so special in its tone?

The Greeny is known for its unique tone in the middle position with its nasal, out of phase sound. The result of Peter Green experimenting with different sounds, he had taken the neck pickup out and when it was replaced - accidentally put it in backwards with the magnets reversed. The result is that magical "cocked wah" type of sound that we've all been chasing ever since. The original Collectors Choice #1 Gary Moore had this mod, the 2023 Custom Shop Kirk Hammett Greeny Les Paul did as well, and of course Gibson USA had to go the full mile in creating this spec on the production run of guitars, too!
