In Store Event: Free Guthrie Govan Clinic
UPDATE: The RSVP for the Guthrie Govan clinic is full. If you have not already RSVP’d, we will not have enough room for any more attendees. Thanks to all of you who did RSVP and we will see you soon!
Save the date on your calendars – the great Guthrie Govan will be giving a clinic at The Music Zoo on Tuesday, January 25th 2011 at 7:30 PM. This is a very special opportunity to see Guthrie perform up close and personal, brought to you by The Music Zoo and Suhr Guitars. It’s free and open to the public! Widely regarded as a bona fide guitar virtuoso, his playing has dropped jaws around the world and we’re super excited to have him visit the store.
From Berklee.edu:
Guthrie Govan, hailing from Chelmsford, UK, is arguably the most exciting and significant new guitarist to emerge in the rock/fusion guitar scene in many years. A brilliant virtuoso who is at home in a variety of musical genres and styles, Govan combines astonishing technique with vast theoretical knowledge, down-to-earth feel, sophisticated harmonic vocabulary, superb improvisation abilities with a penchant for memorable melodies, and woody organic tone. Whether it’s mainstream shred rock a la G3, fusion jazz, chicken-picking country, groove-driven funk, down-home blues, or whatever other style you could think of, Guthrie does ’em all and does so extremely well.
Govan started playing at the age of 3 and was on national British TV for his guitar prowess by the time he was 8. In 1993, Guthrie won the Guitarist of the Year contest sponsored by UK’s Guitarist magazine, started teaching at UK’s prestigious Academy of Contemporary Music, and began writing for Guitar Techniques magazine.
Over the past few years, Govan has been exclusively playing his various Suhr guitars for both recording and live use—from the smoky jazz bars in his hometown to the halls and arenas around the world during his tours with the band Asia. Govan has recently released his long-awaited debut solo album Erotic Cakes and is also featured extensively on the album Window To The Soul by the new progressive rock outfit, GPS (Govan, Payne & Schellen). Currently, Govan is keeping busy with product clinics, educational workshops, and local live shows while working on the follow-up album to the successful debut of his instrumental album Erotic Cakes.
Guthrie has recently been playing and recording with eclectic mash-pop collective the Young Punx (live electronica) and touring with Dizzee Rascal, the U.K.’s foremost grime/rap artist whose last three singles all reached the #1 spot on the U.K. charts.
