Short of the invention of the bolt-on, perhaps nothing has turned the Guitar Industry on its head as much as Eddie Van Halen. Since the first Van Halen album dropped in 1978, guitarists around the world have scrambled to find themselves the ingredients that the inimitable guitarist used on the records or on stage. Of course – you couldn’t find what Eddie was using as a guitar, because he built it himself!
Through the 1980s up to the early 2000s, Eddie partnered with a few different brands to create his signature gear which players could find in stores. The guitars produced during this period were all excellent, but it came down to starting his own company – officially known as EVH, where all his ideas could come to fruition and each and every spec could be approved by the man himself. The beginning of EVH perhaps starts with the Charvel Art Series – guitars striped with Eddies famous color configurations and built to his own specs such as the D-Tuna, basswood body, and a single humbucker. The relationship between Eddie and Fender (whom owns the Charvel brand) continued in 2006 with the release of the EVH/Fender Frankenstein Replica – a 100% exact copy of the red, white and black striped Frankenstein guitar which changed the world and Eddie wielded on countless stages. The result of a collaboration between Eddie and Masterbuilder Chip Ellis, the guitar became an instant collectors item.
From there, the EVH brand was launched under the umbrella of Fender Musical Instruments. Corp. EVH produces many different variations of the Wolfgang model, from the beginners-friendly Wolfgang Standard WG or Exotic Top models, to the gig-friendly Wolfgang Special, up to the USA-built Wolfgang USA Custom, USA HT Hardtop, or USA Edward Van Halen Signature – complete with top-notch electronics, fish-eye hook strap pins and heavy duty killswitch. The latest project by EVH was the Super ’78 guitar, an exact replica of Frankenstein as it appeared on Van Halen 1, with its Black and White Stripe finish, complete with all the accessories Ed toured with around that time! That was an amazing guitar to hold in our hands.
EVH also produces some of the best high-gain amplifiers in the world, known as the EVH 5150 III. The 5150 III comes in multiple variations of head and combo, with 100 watt and 50 watts available, as well as a Lunchbox model for easy practicing or smaller-than-arena sized gigs! There is also the EVH 5150 III Stealth, powered by EL34s for extra British-like crunch tones!
