PRS Silver Sky The Music Zoo Review

A Familiar Shape with Real Vintage Feel and Unique Features

The new Silver Sky is a guitar that John Mayer will certainly feel at home playing, though of course it has it's own PRS flare. Some of the more distinctive features include: A "reverse" PRS headstock that provides even string length behind the nut, while still feeling like an "S" headstock, and matching Mayer's playing style. - A neck shape based off of 1963 and 1964 examples of the guitar that inspired the Silver Sky, with a 25.5" scale and 7.25" fingerboard radius. - Traditional vintage tuners and tremolo - yet both boasting the locking PRS design - Body flush tremolo bridge to create more acoustic resonance. - New 635JM single coils The Silver Sky also boasts the traditional PRS lower horn scoop, a 1-21/32" nut width, and a small bird inlaid rosewood fingerboard.

Silver Sky Tone

We can bet that many people thought they knew how this guitar wound sound just by looking at it. Say it, you think it 'sounds like a Strat' - and you would be somewhat right, but also wrong. The Silver Sky has single-coil pickups that are some of the most high definition and sparkling that we've ever heard. Each pickup position is useful, and the taper of the volume pot feels incredibly smooth, each turn yields a useful tone. The 2 and 4 positions get you that funky in-between tone, and unlike many guitars of this ilk, the bridge position isn't an icepick to your ears. It's wound to be bright and cutting, but not harsh.

Silver Sky Feel

The neck is modeled after original '63 and '64 Stratocasters, and we can't blame that for being the go-to in getting a great feeling neck, because the original '60s guitarshad great necks! The Silver Sky has a perfect "C" shaped neck with just the right amount of shoulder, and paired with the 7.25" radius, rhythm playing is really fun on this guitar.

Why We Like It

The PRS Silver Sky somehow fits right into your hands like a guitar you've already been playing for years. Upon close inspection to small details like the knob shapes, output jack contour, and lower horn scoop make it a guitar that looks very contemporary as it does classic.

You Might Also Consider

If you're looking for something from PRS that has American build quality but is also a little left of center, try the S2 Vela model, which has lots of clarity in the pickups, but some added twang from the brass saddle bridge.
