The Gibson Custom Shop has as rich and storied history as Gibson does as a whole. While a designated section of the company dubbed a “Custom Shop” wasn’t started until 1986, Gibson was always willing to work with artists from the 1920s through the the 1950s to create a special one-off request, such as the Nick Lucas model, Roy Smeck Stage Deluxe, or technically the Les Paul – a signature instrument for none other than Les Paul! Customer requests were rare but not unheard of – such as the famed “Blackburst” 1958 Les Paul finished in black as opposed to the standard Sunburst.
During the restructuring of the company in the late 1980’s, Gibson decided to separate its small but budding Custom Shop to be a separate division, free to build guitars to artists and customers orders, and also beginning to create Artist Signature runs! What the Gibson Custom Shop became most known for was, and still is their commitment to recreating the Golden Era electric guitars of the late 1950s through the early ‘60s – the Historic Reissue Les Paul. The Historic Reissue collection was first introduced in 1993, and included Les Pauls with the chunky neck profiles of the 1950s or slimmer 1960s profiles, period correct hardware, PAF-style humbucking pickups, and high quality flame maple tops. Although models were produced prior to 1993 such as the Heritage 80 Les Paul or the 1979 Les Paul KM, the Historic Reissue guitar took the highly specific details of the 1958-1960 Les Paul to a whole new level of accuracy!
The Historic Reissue series has gone through changes every year since, each year becoming more and more accurate to the reproduction of the originals. In 2013, Gibson Custom re-introduced the use of hide glue neck construction, going onto 2015 where hide glue was starting to be used in the body construction as well, in the top notch True Historic series. The True Historic Les Paul saw the revision of the reissue from the ground up – using lab analysis of original 1950s metal and plastic parts to bring back the look and feel of an original 1959 Les Paul to the way a guitar felt right out of the case in the modern era. We feel that every year’s Reissue guitar is improved from the last, and you can be sure that we pick up and play every Reissue Les Paul that comes through our doors, making sure you will get the best of the best.
The Gibson Custom Shop has a roster of artist-inspired models that dreams are made of. Perhaps the artist closest in relation to the Custom Shop is Slash, with his recreations of the original Appetite for Destruction Les Paul, the Brazilian Dream Les Paul, his 1958 “First Standard” Les Paul, and many more! Other artist runs have included the Jimmy Page Les Paul Custom and his original 1959, the George Harrison “Lucy” Les Paul, Duane Allmans ’59 Les Paul as well as Dickey Betts’ SG. Robby Krieger, Peter Frampton, Kirk Hammett, Joe Bonamassa, Dave Amato, and many more Rock and Roll legends have worked with the Gibson Custom Shop to create their signature instruments that have become coveted guitars which The Music Zoo has sold over the years!
The Music Zoo is proud to have such a close relationship with the Gibson Custom Shop that we’ve done many exclusive runs throughout the years. Our favorites have included the Tom Murphy Ultra Aged Les Paul – taking aging to the next level! There is the shockingly cool Single-Pickup Les Paul with its single bridge pickup and flame maple top, our run of roasted Les Pauls for lighter weights and a well-played vintage tone, and the Wraparound ’59 ES-335 with its single wraparound bridge for a slinky feel. Not to mention, our excellent Made 2 Measure guitars which come to our store-chosen specs, from putting Floyd Roses on Les Paul Juniors to one of a kind finish options!
